Tragic news emerged as 21-year-old college football player and junior safety Ronnie Caldwell from Northwestern State University lost his life due to a shooting in Louisiana, United States.

The incident occurred near NSU’s campus, situated about three hours away from New Orleans, around 1:08 a.m., according to the Natchitoches Police Department.

911 callers reported gunshots in the vicinity, leading to police officers rushing to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered Caldwell with gunshot wounds, and he was later pronounced dead. An ongoing investigation is being conducted to uncover the details surrounding the incident.

In the wake of this tragedy, the Northwestern State football team decided to cancel its scheduled Saturday game against Nicholls State.

In a statement, the team expressed their sorrow, saying, “Ronnie Caldwell was a young man with a promising future, both on and off the football field. He was a vital part of our team, a voice in the locker room.

Our hearts ache for Ronnie’s family and friends, and his absence will be deeply felt at Northwestern State, in Natchitoches, and in his hometown.”

Caldwell, who had transferred from Tyler Junior College after the 2021 season, had participated in 11 games the previous season, ranking seventh on the team in tackles. Unfortunately, he had not played in the current season due to an injury sustained during the preseason.

The Texas native was also a business administration major and had spent his summer coaching a local youth baseball team.
